Even though he hadn't officially gotten his job back yet, Wilson had spent the past couple of days hanging around the hospital. It's not like he had anything better to do. Of course, though, he couldn't keep it that way forever. He needed to be paid for his work.
Wilson knocked on Cuddy's door before entering. He sat down in front of her desk and folded his hands in his lap. "Dr. Cuddy, I hear you're still looking for a head for your department of Oncology," he said, professionally and knowing that he'd get his job back no matter what he said.

The official beginning of the workweek, and Cuddy was the most relaxed she'd ever been. It might have been the weekend with House, or the prospect of their mysterious date the next night. She wasn't sure, but she didn't care. Setting aside the reports from the weekend she'd missed to look over later, she was just starting to re-organize the miscellaneous objects on her desktop when she heard the knock. The door opened before she could give the okay, but it didn't matter.
"Doctor Wilson," she smiled. "Yes. You want your old job back," Cuddy said, looking at him knowingly. This wasn't the first time she'd given him back his job without hesitation. She only hoped it would be the last. "You've got it." She nodded once. "I hope your previous salary is fine; if I give you a pay raise just for coming back, everyone will want one." And the hospital couldn't afford that.

Wilson chuckled. "My previous salary is fine." He could've gotten up and left then. He knew Cuddy was a busy woman. But there was one other thing he had to say. "I'd also like to congratulate you," he said, smiling. "House told me the good news." Wilson could have added, 'Just don't let your kid anywhere near his/her father.' But that would be too harsh. He was sure that House would be a fine father.

Cuddy resisted the urge to sigh and roll her eyes. After all, she had told House that it was okay to tell Wilson. Instead, she returned the smile and sat back in her chair.
"Thank you, James. Just don't go spreading it around the hospital." Cuddy didn't know if she wanted everyone and their dogs knowing just yet, not so soon after she and House had found out. It had only been, what, three days? four? since he'd thrown her test results at her. There was something she'd been thinking about for a while, since she'd started thinking rationally again. Sure that House would have absolutely no problem with it, she decided to put it up for Wilson's consideration.
"I've been thinking. I know you and H-Greg are close...and you and I are close." This time, she did sigh, raising a hand and running it through her hair. "I also know that I'm probably not even two weeks yet, but...I thought I'd ask." Turning her head, she looked straight into Wilson's eyes. "I wanted to ask if you would...consider...being the baby's godfather." There. It was out. It seemed alright to ask now, seeing as how all three of them were close, and it really didn't seem like too much to ask. "I haven't talked to Greg about it yet, so..."

"Your secret's safe with me, Cuddy," he replied. House, on the other hand...well, House wouldn't have any qualms about shouting it around the hospital. Wilson would keep an eye on him. The last thing Wilson wanted was for House to ruin his newfound happiness with Cuddy.
Wilson let a grin spread across his face. "I'd be honored to be the godfather." He had never wanted kids of his own but that didn't mean he hated them.

Even knowing it was uncharacteristic of her under -normal- circumstances, Cuddy figured that this warranted an exception to the rule. She stood up and circled the desk to sit in the chair next to him. Giving Wilson a genuine grin, she leaned over and hugged him.
"Again, thank you. You don't know how much it will mean to all of us." Of course, the baby would probably take to Wilson more easily that to its own father. Wilson was just...caring...like that. Not to mention the baby would need a positive male influence. Not that she'd say that out loud. Realizing she'd probably startled her friend, she pulled away from Wilson, her smile fading to sheepishness. "Sorry..." she apologized. "Hormones..." This was definitely going to take some getting used to.

Cuddy didn't strike Wilson as the hugging type, so when she came around to do just that it took him a moment to react and hug her back. When she pulled away, Wilson had to restrain himself from laughing out loud. "It was just a hug, Cuddy. There's nothing to be sorry about." People were always ready and eager to blame anything and everything, even if they had no reason to.

"Right..." she replied, trying to get herself back under control. "Still...I don't hug my co-workers that often." 'Except House,' her traitorous mind added. She chased that thought away. Now was probably the part where Cuddy was supposed to get up and go back to her spinning office chair and let Wilson get back to his office. But she couldn't bring herself to, for some reason.
"Really, though. You'll probably be the most positive influence any parent could ask for..." Cuddy knew she wasn't being fair to House, but he'd never exactly shown himself to be a positive influence on anyone. He actually encouraged his fellows to break into people's houses, for crying out loud! "I just need to talk to House about it, and we can go from there."

Wilson was flattered by Cuddy's compliment. But there was one thing he had to let her know right now. "I'm not going to be a surrogate father to your kid...You know that, right? I know that House isn't exactly father material but you have to let him try." Wilson was always sticking up for House. That was probably why House treated him with a little bit of respect.

Cuddy nodded, only a little shocked that Wilson could think she was thinking that. Given House's record, however...it was easy to jump to that conclusion. So she didn't blame him.
"I'm not asking you to, James." Cuddy knew he was right. House could prove himself. He had just never had the chance before. "Just...be the kind and caring uncle that will spoil our kid rotten," she shook her head slowly with a light laugh. She'd never in her lifetime expected to be having this conversation with anyone. "I'll probably occasionally get fed up with the spoiling, but that's what mothers do. We'll let House...do whatever it is he's going to do... And we'll all be a happy family." Which was all Cuddy ever wanted in the first place.

Wilson laughed right along with her. "You know I'm an expert at that." Her statement that House would do whatever it was he was going do worried Wilson a little bit because Cuddy had hit it right on the nail. Who knew what House was going to do? "Define 'happy'," Wilson joked.

Even as she said it, she knew it was going to become an issue. Right now, between her and Wilson, they could probably list about five things House would do, and fifty things he wouldn't. Cuddy didn't want to go into that list just yet. If at all. Shaking those thoughts away, she focused.
"Normal...two parents, a kid, decent living conditions...dysfunctional every now and then..." Oh god. It was really hitting her. Whether he knew it or not, Wilson had a way of making a person really see what was going on, all illusions vanished. She turned to Wilson, looking as if she'd just had an epiphany. "Wilson...I'm having House's baby...we could lose our jobs...there are rules against this kind of thing." And there went the mood swings again. And the irrationality. Or maybe she was being rational. She sighed, no way of knowing which was which anymore. Cuddy really didn't want to put Wilson through that.

"Nobody besides the three of us have to know who the father is," Wilson cautiously replied. He left unsaid, though, the problems that would arise once the child was born. If the kid didn't look a lot like House, pretending the father was someone else might work for awhile. On the other hand, if the kid looked too much like House, there was no way to cover that up.

House had said something similar three days ago, and Cuddy had gotten hysterical. Now that Wilson was saying it too, with little to no knowledge of how her previous conversation with House had gone, there was a greater chance that they would be able to keep the secret.
Cuddy also understood what Wilson had left unsaid. They'd had that conversation too. Nine months before they'd have to worry about it, House had said. "There will be betting pools," Cuddy realized. "And someone will want to collect when the baby's born...Unless House puts in some strange bet, then says he was right." It did seem like the sort of thing House would do, and she couldn't exactly stop him.

"A virgin birth?" Wilson jokingly suggested, shrugging his shoulders. "Don't worry about it now, Cuddy. House has nine months to come up with something." And Wilson would also be thinking during those nine months. He would hate to his either of his two friends lose their jobs over their happiness. "Everything's going to be fine."
